Trying clay shooting for the first time can feel slightly daunting, especially when you are not sure what to wear, what to bring or whether everyone else will be more experienced than you.
The good news is that a ladies’ clay shooting day should feel welcoming, relaxed and enjoyable from the moment you arrive. You do not need any previous experience, specialist equipment or knowledge of shooting etiquette. A good instructor will guide you through everything safely and at your own pace.
At She Shoots Collective, our aim is to make shooting feel accessible, sociable and far less intimidating.
Do I Need Any Experience?
Absolutely not.
Many women attend their first event having never held a shotgun before. You will be shown how to stand, how to mount the gun correctly, where to look and how to follow the clay through the air.
Nobody expects you to hit every target. In fact, learning, improving and celebrating your first successful shot is all part of the experience.
If you have shot before, you can usually be placed into a group that suits your ability, allowing everyone to enjoy the session without feeling rushed or held back.
What Should I Wear?
You do not need to buy a full shooting wardrobe for your first day.
Choose practical, comfortable clothing that allows you to move freely. Depending on the weather, this could include:
- A fitted jumper, fleece or gilet
- Comfortable trousers or jeans
- Waterproof outerwear
- Flat boots, trainers or wellies
- Warm layers during the colder months
Avoid very bulky clothing around your shoulders, as this can make it more difficult to position the gun comfortably.
Shooting grounds can be exposed, so it is always worth checking the forecast and bringing an extra layer.
Do I Need to Bring Any Equipment?
For most beginner sessions, everything you need can be provided by the shooting ground, including the shotgun, cartridges and hearing protection.
Safety glasses may also be supplied, although some women prefer to bring their own once they begin shooting regularly.
Before booking, always check what is included in the ticket price. She Shoots Collective event listings clearly explain whether gun hire, cartridges, clays and tuition are included.
What Happens When I Arrive?
Most events begin with introductions, refreshments and a short safety briefing.
Your instructor will explain how the shotgun works, how to carry it safely and what to expect when you step onto the shooting stand. You will then usually take turns shooting within a small group.
The instructor will remain beside you throughout the session, helping with your stance, timing and technique.
There is no pressure to shoot quickly. You will have time to ask questions, make adjustments and build your confidence.
Is Clay Shooting Safe?
Clay shooting is a highly controlled sport with clear safety procedures.
You will be supervised by a qualified instructor, and the gun will only be loaded when you are safely positioned and ready to shoot. Hearing and eye protection should be worn, and all instructions must be followed carefully.
You should never feel afraid to ask for something to be explained again.
What If I Miss Every Clay?
Missing is completely normal, particularly when you are starting.
Clay shooting involves timing, movement and coordination, all of which improve with practice. Even experienced shots miss targets.
Your instructor will help you understand why you may be missing and make small changes to improve your chances. The moment you hit your first clay is usually the moment everything begins to click.
The most important thing is to enjoy the experience rather than focus entirely on your score.
What Is the Atmosphere Like?
One of the best parts of a ladies’ shooting event is the social side.
You can expect plenty of encouragement, conversation and shared excitement when someone hits a difficult target. Many women arrive alone and leave having met new friends with similar interests.
She Shoots Collective events are designed to bring women together in a supportive environment, whether they are complete beginners, regular clay shooters or experienced game shots.
There may also be tea, cake, lunch or drinks included, depending on the event.
Can I Come Alone?
Yes, and many women do.
Coming alone can sometimes feel nerve-racking, but you will be welcomed into the group and introduced to others when you arrive.
Our community exists to make it easier for women to attend countryside and shooting events without needing to already know somebody there.
What Happens After My First Session?
You may decide that clay shooting was simply a lovely day out, or you may immediately want to book another session.
Regular shooting is the best way to build confidence and improve your technique. You can also begin keeping track of your scores, trying different shooting grounds and learning about the various types of clay targets.
As your experience grows, you may want to explore simulated game days, competitions or live game shooting.
There is no required pace. You can enjoy the sport as casually or as seriously as you choose.
Ready to Give It a Go?
Your first clay shooting day does not need to feel intimidating.
Arrive with an open mind, wear something comfortable and be prepared to surprise yourself. You may discover a new hobby, a new community and a completely different way to enjoy the countryside.
